    Righetto Osteria Romana

    Righetto Osteria Romana Review:

We have been going to Haberfield a lot in recent months exploring culinary options they have to offer. This week, it’s from one of the Italian restaurants (there seemed to be a million of them in Haberfield!), called Righetto Osteria Romana.

We went there because our friends from Three Arrows Coffee recommended this restaurant. It seems like their special menu on the wall is actually longer than their actual menu.

    Complimentary Bread and Antipasto

They gave out complimentary warm bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar as a starter. In addition to that, the waiter actually gave us a small plate of complimentary antipasto. Their antipasto was actually very good!

    Zucchini Flower

We ordered the zucchini flowers before they gave us the complimentary antipasto. They were a bit more expensive than the other antipasto. However, they tasted so good!

Linguine allo scoglio – $27 – Long size pasta with calamari, prawns, clams, blue crab in white or red sauce

If you look at the picture below, that phone was a Galaxy S6. It was barely half the size of the plate! For $27, the linguine was an absolute bargain! I’ll just let these pictures do the talking for me. If you like seafood, this is a must order!

Napoletana – $18 – Tomato, mozzarella, anchovies, olives and capers

Their pizza ranked probably just below the top pizzeria in Sydney. We still enjoyed it tho.

    Ice cream

    Ice cream + strawberry… it’s a no-brainer for the kid.

    Affogato

I love how they served the affogato. It was appetising!

The final verdict for Righetto Osteria Romana

What we like the most from Righetto Osteria Romana was their hospitality. We enjoyed every minute of us eating there. Their ginormous plate of seafood pasta was just the icing on the cake.

Do you think I should go?

Definitely! Especially if you like seafood pasta.

  • Yakitori Jin

    Yakitori Jin

    Yakitori Jin Review:

A few weeks ago, we heard about a restaurant in Haberfield, Sydney, that served Japanese Yakitori. Yakitori Jin is the name. We were quite amazed in so many levels. When people talk about Haberfield, it is synonymous with Italian restaurants and ricotta cheesecake. So, opening a Japanese restaurant that predominantly serves yakitori, aka Japanese chicken skewers, was quite a bold move.

We managed to visit Yakitori Jin last week. The restaurant looked pretty unassuming from the outside. There were only a handful of tables inside. We were quite lucky we got a table without a booking. Their yakitori came with two choices: salt and tare (basically you want either salty or sweet). In addition to the Yakitori, they also serve a few rice and noodles dishes.

    Smoky Edamame – $8

It has become our custom to start Japanese dinner with edamame. Instead of just a boiled and salted edamame, they also add an extra element to it!

    Omakase – $24 – 6pc Chef’s selection

Because there were way too many to choose from, we decided to leave it up to the chef (omakase). Their omakase is a selection of six yakitori. I love a good element of surprise in my dining experience.

Our first three yakitori are Okura (Okra), Perino tomato with camembert cheese, and Kokoro (Chicken Heart). You might not be able to judge from the picture (it looked like a regular sticks), but these three were amazing!

z3 Yakitori Omakase from Yakitori Jin

The next three were the ‘normal’ chicken skewers: Mune Chicken breast, Momo Chicken thigh, and Negima Chicken thigh and breast with leek. Again, you can’t really justify how it tasted from the picture. They were very good!

When you work on the Maths, it ends up being $4 a stick… not a bad deal!

    Wagyu line meat – $6

Yakitori Jin also has a couple of specials in the menu. We were interested in one of the specials that night: wagyu line meat – Gyu suji Kushiyaki. It was so good that even our little one wanted one!

    Artery – $4

At the bottom of the menu, they mentioned ‘some rare parts of yakitori are limited in stock’. One of the rare parts was chicken artery. Obviously the rare parts might not be for everyone. But for us, it was such a treat!

Yakitori don – $9.90 – a bowl of rice topped with yakitori tare

When you go to a restaurant, usually they don’t really take good care of your kids or they thought that chicken nuggets or fish and chips would do for these young ones. Yakitori Jin managed to present quite a nice rice bowl. I was just curious what happened to the kids who don’t eat chicken skewers.

Yaki Onigiri – $11 – A grilled rice ball with Jin soup (rich chicken soup with meat balls)

From the face value, $11 might be a steep proposition for a rice ball and a bowl of soup. But I think this is the dish that you don’t want to miss out… seriously! The soup was super rich and yummy… and did I mention grilled rice?

The final verdict for Yakitori Jin

Throughout the process of writing this review, I can’t stop thinking about when I will visit the place again. It’s just that good!

  • Pasticceria Papa

    Pasticceria Papa

    Pasticceria Papa Review:

In Sydney, you can spend $65 for four fragile and sophisticated-looking desserts. Unfortunately, we are not talking about that for this week. Instead, we will be talking about one of the best Italian desserts place in Sydney… and most of their cakes are around $5 or less.  How good is that!

For those of you living in Inner West, the name Pasticceria Papa will not sound too foreign for you. Their shop in Haberfield has been around since 1988. They started off as a bread and pastry shop. Now, they have a full-fledged restaurant in addition to the shop.

    Mini Ricotta Cake – $4.50

This is what Pasticceria Papa famous for. Mini ricotta is the smallest that you can get… perfect to be devoured by yourself… no sharing!

The ricotta cake is scalable to be as large as you wish. I’ve been to a birthday party where they have a 20-person ricotta cake from Pasticceria Papa.

    Vanilla Baba – $3.50

I was quite curious about this dessert… well, partially because it was rum-soaked. Vanilla baba is a yeast cake with vanilla custard on top of it.

    Arancini – $4.50 – Chicken / Veal / Mushroom

We came across the arancini completely by accident. We were looking for something savoury at Pasticceria Papa but we were not that interested in the pesto pasta at that time. There was only one mushroom arancini left at that time and we had no expectation whatsoever.

    Pizza – $5.50 – Mushroom / potato

It was quite a sorry-looking pizza slice and we weren’t interested in ordering. However, the little one managed to choose that for his dinner and ended up finishing it.

The final verdict for Pasticceria Papa

Getting a decent dessert for less than $5 is pretty unheard of these days. Pasticceria Papa delivers that with a taste of Italian desserts that is unmatched in Sydney!

    Did you know?

We visited Pasticceria Papa in Haberfield. They have two other stores in Sydney: Bondi Beach and Five Dock. The Haberfield and Bondi Beach stores are also setup as a proper Italian restaurant. But maybe that’s for next time.
