    Seed Greek Kouzina Review:

We saw an ad board for Seed Greek Kouzina as we walked down a small road in Petersham towards the main New Canterbury Road. It read ‘6-course for $35 every Tuesday and Wednesday’. If you like eating out, I’m sure you agree with me that a 6-course meal for $35 is a very good bargain… oh I forgot to mention: you also get a glass of wine for that price!

Surely enough, we are at the restaurant this week to try this menu out! They officially called it: Tuesday and Wednesday Mid-Week Banquet – $35 pp. The courses were predominantly seafood with only one exception, the salad.

    Warm bread + taramasalata

There is nothing more perfect than starting your dinner at a Greek restaurant with warm bread and taramasalata. FYI, taramasalata is a Greek small dish (called meze) made out of fish roe.

GF Crisp fried baby seafood, lemon aioli

Our second course was a shared plate of deep fried small prawns with lemon aioli. The great thing about crunchy prawns is that you don’t need to spend hours peeling off their shells.

    Krokettes – smoked mackerel croquettes

Almost at the same time of the second course, they also served smoked mackerel croquettes. It was a nicely done croquette!

Marinated grilled fish of the day (barbounia or red mullet)

From the display perspective, the main course was a tad underwhelming. You got four red mullets to be shared by three people.

Talking about the taste tho… oh boy, it was very delicious!

Lahanosalata (greek slaw) – cabbage and walnut salad

A salad is usually not my best friend. However, their salad was quite filling and decent.

Rizogalo (rice pudding), mango puree, macadamia nuts, vanilla ice cream

They have quite an interesting dessert by Australian standard. Not many people would think rice as a dessert. Personally, I think the rice pudding was nice, especially with the added crunch of macadamia nuts and the cooling vanilla ice cream.

    Calamari and Chips – $12

The restaurant does not mind if children share your meal at no extra cost. However, they also serve kids meal if you wish to do so.

The final verdict for Seed Greek Kouzina

I don’t think anyone would argue that $35 for a 6-course meal was a bargain. Seed Greek Kouzina managed to deliver that with quite a decent quality of food.

Do you think I should go?
The banquet was only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you are able to come to Petersham, it’s a very good option to have for a hump day dinner.

    Zeus Street Greek

    Review:

If you haven’t driven along New Canterbury Road in recent years, you might be in for a surprise. There are two new eateries that attract huge crowd, especially on the weekend. One of them is Zeus Street Greek. It is one of a few outlets that Zeus has.

    Zeus Menu

The menu was quite simple and had a good mixture of salad, sides, dips and main dishes. The entrees that we ordered were beetroot, corn cobs, pita bread and chips. We ordered the pita bread to accompany one of the main dishes.

Beetroot – $12.50 – Beetroot, feta, walnuts, honey and mint (GF)

    z1-Beetroot-1250

Corn cobs – $9.50 – Roasted corn cobs with grated kefalotiri (GF)

    z2-Corn-Cobs---950

    Pita bread (2) – $3.00

    z3-Pita-bread---3

Probably the one thing that I remembered the most was the chips. They were quite different. It was quite large, thin and very crispy.

    Chips – $6.50

    z4-Chips---650

The main dishes are divided into two: pitas and nude. Before you start thinking something x-rated… I think they said ‘nude’ because it’s comparatively bare and uncovered when compared with the ones wrapped in pita bread.

There are three nude dishes and all served with a side of tzatziki and lemon. They are only available in one size only, 200 gr. It’s not bad for a light dinner.

Don’t forget to order an extra pita bread if you order these ones or any other sides as they don’t come with any.

Nude Lamb (200gr) – $18.50 – Our signature lamb from the souvla served with a side of tzatziki and lemon (GF)

Nude Chicken (200gr) – $15.50 – Our signature chicken from the souvla served with a side of tzatziki and lemon (GF)

    z7-Nude-Chicken-and-Lamb

The two pitas that we ordered on this occasion are both lamb.  I cannot really tell the difference between the two, but they were both quite enjoyable.

The Zeus – Lamb – $12.50 – Our signature lamb with Aegean slaw, smoked eggplant, onion and parsley.

The Zeus from Zeus Street Greek

Uncle ‘Tzimmy’ Lamb – $12.50 – Our signature lamb with tomato, tzatziki, onion, paprika and chips, wrapped in pita.

The final verdict for Zeus Street Greek

Zeus Street Greek is quite a good place to have a quick lunch and dinner.

The other eatery that attracted a huge crowd in the vicinity is Tella Balls.

    Review:

Our review this week came at the back of an ad hoc visit to a one-hat restaurant, Xanthi Bar and Restaurant (Greek: ????h?). To give you a perspective on how rare this was, we only went to a hat restaurant on special occasions, like birthdays.

The original title of our first dish was BBQ Calamari, but we had it changed to Crumbed Calamari ($16) because it suited our son better and they were willing to accommodate that. As expected, the calamari was perfectly fried. Our second dish of the day was a staple in a lot of Mediterranean/Greek restaurants, Dip Selection ($10). I think it was a great bargain for its price. You got tarama (salmon roe), split pea, and tzatziki dips and toasted pita bread.

This next salad/fruit combination might be a bit unusual to some people, Watermelon and Manouri Salad ($11). It was a combination of watermelon, manouri cheese, candied almonds, and vanilla & honey vinaigrette. It turned out to be quite a refreshing dish with a playful sweet and savoury taste to it. Conversely, the Seafood Filo Rolls ($22) suggested by the waitress fell short of my expectations. The dish sounded really fancy: prawns and scallops with a cayenne pepper, coriander and flaked almond cream sauce, served with cos lettuce and cucumber ribbon salad with an olive oil vinaigrette dressing.

Our next dish was the most expensive of the night, 250gms Lamb ‘Horiatiko Souvla’ (from the spit) ($38) – Served with toursi (greek pickles), tzatziki, Greek salad and chips.  I am a big fan of its crispy lamb skin! It was seriously crunchy like pork crackling and I’ve never tasted lamb skin cracked like that!

Our last dish of the day was Deconstructed Seafood Saganaki (34). We got two skewers of marinated prawn and calamari with spicy seafood sauce and creamed feta complemented the decoration.

The downside of our visit there was that they missed the extra order, we wanted Lokaniko Spetsofai (sausage), but it never came.

The final verdict for Xanthi Bar and Restaurant

As expected from a one-hat restaurant, Xanthi Bar and Restaurant delivered us quality meal in their dishes. However, with the exception of its Horiatiko Souvla’s crackling, there was really nothing spectacular either.
