The Eate, On The Spit and Off The Grill

    The Eate Review:

I don’t know what the best description for The Eate. Personally, I think it is as an upmarket charcoal chicken and/or burger joint.

Looking at their menu, they put much emphasis on their spit roast meats. Burgers and Yiros are the next main items in the menu.

Spiced Eggplant Chips – $10 – with pomegranate, mint & parsley

Every once in a a while you find something on the menu that is very unusual and make you wonder how it would taste. Eggplant chips is one of them for me. Seriously, how can you resist deep fried eggplant?

The Fish – $12 – Flathead fillet with herb aioli, chesse, lettuce, guindillas

Before writing this review, I have to google guindillas first. Apparently it is a Spanish word for chili peppers. Don’t be alarmed, the guindillas they used were super mild.

Yiros – $11.5 – Spiced chicken with onion, parsley, guindillas, shallots, garlic sauce, tomato, chips, in fresh made pita

A friend of ours told me that when you visited The Eate you must order their charcoal chicken. Their spiced chicken is actually a derivative of the charcoal chicken, enhanced further with spices for the yiros.

    Chicken Wrap from The Eate

    Small salad – $6

They have a few different salad dishes you can choose from over the counter. If you are feeling a bit peckish you might want to order some.

    Latte – $3.50

Their coffee is actually not bad when compared to the ones around the area.

The final verdict for The Eate

The Eate is quite a decent burger/yiros joint. You might want to try their charcoal chicken when you are there.

    Did you know?

The Eate’s location is a bit out of the way in Dulwich Hill unless you came by light rail. It is just next to the Dulwich Grove station.

    Ribs and Burgers Zetland Review:

Our review this week is from a restaurant that has grown so much in the last couple of years that they now have 10 restaurants in New South Wales. We visited Ribs and Burgers in Zetland quite often for lunch. It is located outside the new-ish East Village Shopping complex in Zetland.

    Crispy Onion Rings – $6

What’s better than a good onion rings? A bucket of ‘em! You kinda need to share it with a friend because it’s quite a big portion for a lunch’s side dish.

    Onion Rings

Old School Cheese – $11 – Beef patty, American cheese, onion, mustard and pickles with BBQ sauce & aioli

If you want a no-drama, classic beef burger, this is the one for you.

    Old School Cheese

The Apple Lamb Burger – $16 – Lamb patty, green apple, rocket, onion, blue cheese mayonnaise and aioli

Apple is usually reserved as a companion for roast pork. Naturally, I was quite curious about its suitability with a lamb meat. It was quite refreshing to taste a lamb burger without its ‘usual’ companion: mint.

The Short Rib Burger – $16

When I ordered the first time, little did I know that the short rib burger was a limited-time availability. When I got back there the other day, the burger has been replaced by something else on the menu.

All I can say is, keep an eye on this one when you see it on the menu… and order it! It’s so good!

    The Short Rib Burger

Thickshake – $8 – Milo or Vanilla Malt

It’s a slight overkill to order thickshake with a burger for your lunch. But I just had to do it!

The final verdict for Ribs and Burgers Zetland

Ribs and Burgers in Zetland has quite a decent lineup for lunch. The price point is still okay when compared to restaurants in the vicinity.

    Did you know?

This is actually my second review for Ribs and Burgers. My first one was for Ribs and Burgers at the Star back in 2013. At that time, I was focusing more on the ribs side of it.

  • Super Simple American Smoky Beef Brisket with BBQ Sauce

Super Simple American Smoky Beef Brisket with BBQ Sauce

Recently, there is a surge of burger joints in Sydney that serve American-style burger that looks pretty messy and possibly disregard any health concern. I tried a couple of them, especially the smoky beef brisket, and was instantly loving it. Coupled that with a tv show called “Man Fire Food” and here I am searching a way to make smoky beef brisket!

I read a recipe from Taste.com.au on how to make smoky beef brisket and tweaked it a bit. This way, I don’t need to purchase additional ingredients that I might not need in the near future.

    Smoky Beef Brisket

What do we need to make Smoky Beef Brisket?

    This is the original recipe:
    1. 1/2 cup smoky bbq sauce
    2. 1/4 cup bourbon
    3. 3 garlic cloves, crushed
    4. 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
    5. 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    6. 1.3kg beef brisket

I substituted the sauce and bourbon to 3/4 cup of McCormick Grill Mates Brown Sugar Bourbon BBQ sauce (because this is the one I currently have at home). I also use Mexican chili instead of cayenne pepper.

The preparation for making Smoky Beef Brisket

Combine all of the ingredients above in a baking dish (quite a big one). Make sure you coat every part of the beef brisket (turn several times if needed). Once the beef brisket is fully immersed in the marinade, cover the dish with cling wrap. Leave it in the fridge overnight (or a minimum of four hours in the fridge).

You might also want to buy burger buns and coleslaw for the salad.

How do we make the Smoky Beef Brisket using conventional oven?

    1. Preheat oven to 160 °C or 140 °C fan-forced.
    2. Cover the baking dish with aluminium foil.
    3. Bake for 2.5 hours.
    4. Turn the beef upside down. Be careful when taking the dish out as it is very hot.
    5. Bake for another 2 hours or until you can easily scoop the beef with fork.

A little tips to make your perfect Smoky Beef Brisket

    1. For the cup measurement, I use the standard kitchen cup (possibly something around 237 ml).
    2. Be generous with the marinade sauce. Be VERY generous!
    3. Add extra chili for extra kick!

    Rating:

    7.5 / 10  Taste: 7.5/10

    Price: $10 – $29 per main course

Place: 7/10 (well it’s still a food court, even if it’s a nice one!)

    Review:

My love for anything ribs landed me to Ribs & Burgers. The restaurant was opened at the same time of the launch of the renaming of Star City to The Star. The Star branch of Ribs and Burgers is located at the café court. It restricted me from giving a higher point as the ambience is pretty much ‘food court’.

    Ribs & Burgers

Straight off the bat, my eyes were directed to ‘The R&B Succulent Ribs Range’ and saw the Lamb Ribs for only $22 (with a choice of chips or cabbage salad)! To be honest, I was quite sceptical about it at first, considering most ribs places would charge in excess of $35 for a plate of ribs. My worries subsided as soon as I saw the wooden board with two racks of lamb ribs. From the taste department, they were also not beaten when compared to our regular ribs joints! Simple and delicious!

    Lamb Ribs 2  Lamb Ribs

If lamb was not your culinary preference, you could have an option of Beef Ribs ($21) or Pork Ribs ($29). Both are still equally affordable, but instead of two racks, you only got one rack. Seriously, two racks of these would be overkill! For this, I only tasted the beef ribs. It was too thin to my liking, but it packed the same punch as the lamb ribs.

    Beef Ribs Beef Ribs 2

For a cheaper alternative (and less ribs) you can choose the Korean Ribs, a great value of $14 and you can choose between Beef or Pork ribs, cut and basted Korean-style. $14 ribs… seriously!

As the restaurant was named Ribs and Burgers, tasting the burger was a must! My choice went to Wagyu Burger (225gr, $18) from their ‘R&B Butchers Choice Burger Range’. When I saw the burger, it was big and appetising! The lower bun looked quite crushed (presumably by the heavy wagyu beef meat). The burger was a bit pink in the middle, because of the wagyu beef, so you might need to ask for a ‘well done’ if you dislike medium-grilled meat. Chock-full of goodies, including crunchy onion rings, I think the burger would be more than enough for lunch but barely met my requirements for dinner. It was a nice alternative if you didn’t want to eat the heavy ribs.

Ribs & Burgers also served the kids range with a complementary side of chips. We ordered Beef Burger ($7) for this one and I think the size was quite okay.

The final verdict for Ribs & Burgers

We were actually quite surprise that Ribs & Burgers delivered fantastic dishes! Best-priced ribs you can get for a weekend outing with friends and family.

    Did you know?

You might want to go to Ribs and Burgers Neutral Bay branch for the restaurant experience.

The Star’s café court used to look very dark and boring. The refurbishment made The Star looked pretty vibrant now. The list of restaurants occupying its directory list includes a three-hat, a one-hat and several other highly regarded restaurants in Sydney.
