Bali, the island of Gods, is the most famous destination for Australian. I am sure I do not need to give you more description about Bali.

    Restaurant Locavore

This week we will write about our experience in dining at one of the best in Australasia, Restaurant Locavore. This restaurant is sitting at number 21 in the list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2018. They were a few spots off the world’s top 100 list. To give you a bit more context, out of all of the restaurants in Australia, only Attica and Brae ranked higher than this restaurant!

This will be a super long review because they served us 7 main courses, 2 desserts, 8 ‘snacks’, 8 chocolates and 1 closing dish for a whopping 26-course degustation lunch. The official menu only stated 9 dishes, priced at Rp 1.200.000,- or equal to AUD 150.

    They call it ‘Snacks’

Upon arrival at the restaurant they gave us a couple of very pretty flower arrangement that they called ‘Cana’. What we didn’t know that the flowers were all edible! They gave us a hibiscus spray, and kecombrang puree with drops of cricket oil. Super fancy and we were just starting up!

To shorten this review considerably, I won’t go to too much details on the snacks. Each and every one of them were masterfully prepared. The mango and bengkoang dish was quite sweet with a hint of spicy. The pumpkin leaf was pretty filling despite it being crunchy. Then you got the sophisticated black rice blini that had a million taste.

It got better from there, the mushroom custard was very yummy with the distinct flavour of native kelor leaves. Then they had BBQ mango. It was sweet and super smoky. The mango kombucha was a sweet addition to the dish. The tomato sorbet and tomato consommé was quite an eye-opening. The dish was hot and cold at the same time. It was super refreshing!

The last snack was pretty interesting. There were three condiments for the brioche bun: chili jam, cashew nut puree, and freeze dried leftover vegetables… yes, you read that right: they even reused their leftover vegetables! Awesome!

    [smartslider3 slider=3]

    Main Dish at Locavore

After what seems to be an eternity of snacks, we come to the first dish of the day. Cut the crab was the official name. They transformed the mud crab into a cold salad with jellied crab consomme. They then put a layer of pickled young papaya and bengkoang (instead of mango as the menu suggested). Grated bonito katsuobushi was put as a finishing touch.

We then have Foie Gras Kambing, aka Goat Liver mousse. To complement the strong taste, they introduced pickled wild berries. On top of the foie gras, they had rice flour cracker and a sprinkle of green veggies. They had two garnishes to finish off: first they grated smoked goat heart then sprayed the dish with Rosella kombucha vinaigrette.

The third dish, jagung bakar, paid homage to a snack that most Indonesian loves, grilled corn. The twist here is they use coffee-miso emulsion and coffee kombucha reduction! They also used charred baby corn and added a little termite powder on top of it.

My son loved it so much that they actually gave him an extra plate (and that’s after having most of mine as well)!

The next dish was supposed to be Cabbage and Bacon. However, we had it changed to a vegetarian version. For this, they gave us Banana blossom noodles. The ‘noodles’ were doused with white curry turmeric leaves, that tasted traditionally Indonesian with deep fried green leaves as garnish.

    The Signature Dish

Their signature dish is Into The Sawah. Dish dish is a story of everything that live around the Ubud’s rice field. They consisted of the following: Heritage galuh rice porridge, 64 degrees duck egg yolk, snails, frog leg abon, fern tips, wild flowers.

They boiled the duck egg yolk at exactly 64 degrees for 1 hour. That resulted in some kind of state between solid and runny.

Gurita Bakar is our penultimate main course. They twice-cooked the main ingredient, the octopus (or gurita): boiled and then grilled to perfection. They also introduced Mexican-inspired mole using a traditional ingredient, kluwak. Enhancing the taste, they used the sourness of belimbing wuluh and freshness of timun tikus with the pickled spring onions.

Quail, or Burung Puyuh, was the last main for the day. They used two parts of the quail: the quail breast, roasted to perfection, and the leg that was barbecued and glazed. They used smoked pumpkin and charred pineapple gel to complement the dish.

    Desserts at Locavore

Looking at the menu, the desserts sounded pretty traditional. Bubur tape is a fermented rice porridge and boni is a traditional fruit from Bali.

Traditionally, bubur tape is warm. At Locavore, the dish was served at room temperature, except for the palm sugar ice cream. Interestingly, the ice cream wasn’t really that cold either!

In addition to the porridge and ice cream, they also have fermented black rice foam (that purple blob in the middle). Probably I would have liked this more if it was a tad sweeter.

If you are wondering about the yellow shavings at the top of the ice cream, that shaving was sugar cured egg yolk!

Boni or blood berry is a native fruit of Bali. They also have pomelo, or what the locals called Balinese orange. They also used pickled rose petals and hibiscus leaves as garnishes. The resulting dish was this complex dessert that was sweet, sour, crunchy, cold and quite heavy – especially being the 17th dish of the afternoon!

    After Desserts at Locavore

We were almost packed up for the afternoon before the restaurant manager mentioned there were still a couple more dishes to go. Some members of my group almost gave up upon hearing the news.

The first ‘surprise’ was eight pieces of chocolate in different textures. They used a traditional game board called ‘congklak‘ to serve them. Some of the more notable ones were coffee rice cookie, kaffir lime krokant and dried pineapple dark chocolate.

We finally came to an end with the Mangosteen ice cream. Served on a coconut husk, the dish consisted of fresh longan, coconut flesh, nata de coco and coconut cream with lime skin shaving as garnish.

It was incredibly refreshing and tasty. Somehow we forgot that it was the 26th dish that we had that day.

    Drinks at Locavore

They do have drink pairings for the lunch service, but we didn’t go for them. We opted for the normal drinks and cocktails on the menu. One of them was the ‘ashes’ that involved dipping burned cassia bark into your drink!

The final verdict for Restaurant Locavore

Restaurant Locavore is without a doubt the best restaurant in Indonesia. It is comparable to, or probably even better than, most high end dinings in Australia.

The staffs were super friendly and super attentive. The massive plus is that the restaurant welcomes children as well! – I must say it’s super rare for a fine dining restaurant.

Do you think I should go?

    Definitely!

  • Bebek Tepi Sawah

    Bebek Tepi Sawah

    Bebek Tepi Sawah Review:

Our review this week came from a now-franchised restaurant in Indonesia. Bebek tepi sawah is literally translated in English to ‘edge-of-a-rice-field duck’. The first Bebek Tepi Sawah restaurant was opened in Ubud, Bali. On this occasion, we went to one of its branches in Pondok Indah Mall in Jakarta. The menu is quite similar to the one in Bali, but with more emphasise on the Indonesian dishes.

    z1 Bebek Tepi Sawah Menu

Duck restaurant in Indonesia is usually famous because of its chili sauces. In Bebek tepi sawah, you get three different chilli sauces: red chilli, fried chilli, and Balinese’s special sambal matah. Each and every one of them is above my spicy threshold.

Tepi sawah crispy duck or grilled duck – 109 – Our signature traditional duck with choices of deep fried or grilled served with Balinese vegetable, rice, and three types of sambal (merah, matah, goreng)

Their signature duck came in either grilled with soy sauce or deep fried. The grilled version is more on the sweet side and the deep fried is savoury.

Grilled Duck - Bebek Tepi Sawah

Bebek Betutu – 102k – One of all-time favourite dishes in Bali, the duck is stuffed with banana leaf and traditional balinese spices, then grilled. Served together with lawar, rice, and sambal.

Betutu is the traditional steamed-version of the duck. Betutu spice is notoriously spicy. I wouldn’t recommend you touching it unless you are an avid chilli lover.

Iga bakar tepi sawah – 109k – A set of grilled beef short ribs marinated with soy sauce, served with lawar and rice

This was the dish that I ordered. The ribs portion was quite small when compared to the ones in Sydney.

Sup Iga Garang Asam – 99k – Braised short ribs beef soup with special sour herbs and served with our special chili

Sate Bangli – 65k – Marinated chicken skewers with soy sauce, grilled, and served with sambal pelalah

The final verdict for Bebek Tepi Sawah

When your restaurant is called ‘edge-of-a-rice-field duck’, eating in a giant mall in Jakarta somewhat diminished its value. The duck itself did not manage to beat my favourite duck restaurant in Indonesia. I quite enjoyed the beef ribs I ordered.

    Did you know?

Bebek Tepi Sawah has four outlets in Jakarta – the same number of outlets they have in Bali!

  • Komune Beach Club

    Komune Beach Club

    Review:

In our last leg of our holiday at the end of last year, we went to an area in Bali (possibly) least visited by tourists called Candi Dasa. It was a very nice and peaceful area where divers love to visit. However, the place has a huge drawback: food. There was practically none that’s worth mentioning.

Luckily one day we went a bit out of the area and was recommended to this restaurant by my cousin who live in Bali: Komune Beach Club. It was a pretty modern beach club with beach-side pool and a nice bar area. The menu sounds very Australian with Australian slang such as chook.

Super club sandwich – 85k – Grilled chicken tomato lettuce avocado fried egg and bacon

It was quite a regular club sandwich that you can find in Sydney (I guess it can be considered ‘super’ in Indonesia). They also give you wavy potato chips.

    Super club sandwich – 85k

‘Island of the Gods’ salad – 80k – Freshly seared sliced tuna on a bed of mixed greens, sesame seeds and mushrooms, with A special Asian dressing.

I am not going to talk about the mixed greens salad because… well… it’s just a mixed greens salad. I’m more intrigued with the seared sliced tuna. For a country not known for fresh fish eaten semi-raw, the tuna was actually pretty good!

‘Island of the Gods’ salad – 80k

Fish and chips – 55k – Fresh local fish delicately crumbed served with fries and salad

The fish and chips that we ordered was from the kids menu section. It was quite a decent portion for a kids menu. I also love that they actually gave salad for the kids!

    Fish and chips – 55k

Cheese burger – 70k – Homemade 180gram juicy beef pattie with sliced cheese topper

Cheese burger was the one that I actually ordered in Komune Beach Club that day. I would normally think that 180gr is a bit small but I had to take what’s available. It was quite a decent burger with (interestingly) pasta-like sauce, crinkle cut chips and a curious side of pickled gherkin and salt.

It wasn’t the most amazing burger ever, but it was quite an antidote for our deprivation of good quality food.

    Cheese burger – 70k

The final verdict for Komune Beach Club

Komune Beach Club menu is heavily influenced by Australian cuisine. The portion is quite big when compared to regular Indonesian dishes.

    Did you know?

I later found out that Komune also has a hotel in Gold Coast. I guess that explained the Australian theme.

Candi Dasa, and its surrounding area like Padang Bai, is actually a well-known diving area.

    Review:

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is the most awesome restaurant chain I have ever visited. They created the whole Forrest Gump (that movie with Tom Hanks) experience complete with their version of the characters’ favourite food. As you might already realise by now, their specialty is shrimps.

    Bubba Gump

    Bubba Gump

It got more awesome with the fact that the restaurant was decorated in a ‘60s setting. The staffs were incredibly cheerful and every so often you’ll hear them singing happy birthday with a full ‘orchestra’ (drums made of tin cans etc). There were sign plates (Run Forrest Run and Stop Forrest Stop) on each table to signal the waiters rather than just waving our hands.

    Bubba Gump interior

Our first dish of the day was Traditional Shrimp Cocktail. A dozen of jumbo shrimp served with Bubba Gump’s zesty cocktail sauce in an icy goblet. It was a nice and refreshing start of the day. FYI, the sauce was a little bit hot.

    Traditional Shrimp Cocktail

Barramundi with Lemon Garlic cream sauce was our first dish of the day. It turned out to be the least impressive dish with a little excess on the lemon. Our first theme-influenced dish came out next, Lt. Dan’s Drunken Shrimp. These chargrilled shrimps were positioned upside down to illustrate the ‘drunk’ness. It was complemented by sausages, mashed potatoes, and string crackers with Bourbon sauce. One of the dishes you must order at the restaurant!

    Lt. Dan's Drunken Shrimp

Bubba’s after the storm ‘bucket of boat trash’ presented a different approach for the night. Various deep fried seafood and chips were laid out on special-purpose (and clean!) newspapers in a tin bucket. You will also get three sauces (cocktail, tartare, and garlic oil) and a small plate of salad. Even with the skin on, the shrimps were edible-y crunchy with perfect seasoning. It might be one of the more expensive range (at Rp 230,000.00 ~ AU$ 25) but it is definitely worth trying!

Bubba's after the storm 'bucket of boat trash'

Bourbon street mahi-mahi was a bit too similar to the drunken shrimp but in this version, they used fish fillets instead of shrimps. For your little one, you can order Li’l Forest’s Favorite fish and chips complete with its ornament ship and fresh vegetables.

Li'l Forest's Favorite Fish and Chips

Our first choice of dessert was my all-time favourite dessert Mama’s Cinnamon bread pudding. It’s a shame that the plate looked so messy since the actual centrepiece was really nice. The biggest surprise of the day came in last, Chocolate chip cookie sundae. The waiter recommended us and it looked like the most unhealthy food I’ve ever seen. The dessert soon became the best of the day since it was incredibly yummy! Mountain of whipped cream with peanuts and chocolate and caramel sauce covered the hidden warm chocolate cookie. For someone who doesn’t like chocolate, not only could I stand this dish, I actually wanted more of it!

The final verdict for Bubba Gump Shrimp Co

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is not just a restaurant with the perfect rendition of Forrest Gump’s era. Their shrimp-dominated menu was also fantastic. If you still have some space on your tummy, I would strongly suggest the Chocolate chip cookie sundae.

    Did you know?

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. also provided entertainment for kids and adults alike. They had the catch the mascot game and also trivia about the movie. So for those of you Die Hard Forrest Gump fans, brush up your skills and take this ultimate challange!

    Review:

One of the most famous dinner destinations in Bali (and possibly Indonesia), Jimbaran Seafood Restaurants. However, we always chose to eat @ Ubung Cafe or Nyoman Cafe when we went there.

    Jimbaran Seafood Restaurants

There are not many choices in terms how to cook the seafood – it was mainly grilled. You would typically need to choose your live seafood from the aquariums and they would need to weigh the food, before they grilled them. We were given three condiments (yummy peanut sauce, hot and sweet soy sauce, and chilli) and a complimentary stir-fried water spinach and rice.

We ordered the most famous crustaceans, Grilled Lobster. Easily the most expensive dish in the area, the lobster came in different sizes. The lobster was really exceptional and sweet. As with all lobsters, it would be great to actually peel their shells before cutting into small pieces. Clawing into the lobsters’ meat straight away would result in difficulties in acquiring the leftover meat on its shell.

Our next dish was Grilled King Prawns. Personally, I like the king prawns better than the lobster because the meat was actually softer. The king prawns have a similar grill sauce to the lobster.

We also ordered Grilled Mussels and Grilled Squids. I was a little disappointed with the squid because apparently they took away the tentacles. However, both dishes were very nice and fresh.

There are not much options for the drinks, they are either beers, soft drinks or fresh juices.

    Did you know?

Jimbaran is a very nice beach to go to. You can see the sunset while enjoying your dinner there. You can also see airplanes landing to Ngurah Rai International airport from the distance – the airstrip was actually further into the ocean. It is also an ideal destination if you just want to walk along the beach. But, there are no water sports and sunbathing at this beach.

    Review:

Recommended to me as one of the best restaurants in the region, Bebek Bengil did not disappoint us for one bit. There was a complementary Valet service in front of the restaurant. It was a little dark when we walked into the restaurant and the attendant asked whether we wanted to sit on the table or lesehan (kinda like Japanese tatami seats).

On our way to the table we walked in the middle of paddy (rice)’s field. We were seated on a small hut that has two sets of table. It was quite an open space but yet feel very private because in between huts lies paddy fields. The menu book looked like a novel since it had a lot of pages with blank spaces put in generously. It was a quite unique menu with specials written inside a box.

    Bebek Bengil

This time we skipped on appetiser; jumped into main course and ordered the named restaurant, Bebek Bengil. It’s half a duck cooked to golden brown and really crispy and served with a bowl of rice. We were given two bowls of condiments and one bowl of vegetables. The condiments are a bowl of chopped chilli and onion and massive amount of chilli hot but with medium hotness. The duck’s crispness is the restaurant’s trademark, combined with their sauces.

For the other main course, we ordered Fresh Grilled Seafood. Presentation wise, it looked a lot more appealing than the duck. There were 4 slice s of snappers, 3 prawns, and 6 grilled calamari in the meat department and 2 slices of red, yellow, and green paprika, eggplant. There were also condiments for this dish: garlic oil and chopped chilli onion. It would easily be shared between two people!

I might say it was a mistake to order the drink: Yellow Giant Duck, because it was really giant *sigh*. However the combination between the mango and pineapple (possibly with a little bit of orange juice) was nice.

As if those dishes were not enough, we also ordered Italian tiramisu for dessert. It was quite nice – I would rate it quite better if I did not have my favourite tiramisu on my mind (Badde Manor’s of Sydney). The tiramisu was creamy and I think it would have been much better if it were softer. We were lucky enough to taste their best dessert in the restaurant: The Black Russian. The cake was quite soft and yummy with great tasting cream on top.

    Did you know?

Bali… I’m sure everyone would know everything there are about Bali. I’m just gonna tell you about a little piece of Bali called Ubud, this is where bebek bengil is located. Unlike Kuta or Nusa Dua, Ubud is the place to rest your mind, body and soul (and that’s why there are hundreds of spa houses). The place is very relaxing and great for quality holiday away from crowds. We stayed in a resort called Beji Ubud Resort. It was such a fantastic new resort.

Ubud is famous for its numerous art galleries, traditional dance shows, and monkey forest.
