Celebrating Indonesia Independence Day at P’Nut Zetland

P’Nut collaborated with the Indonesian consulate to host an event to celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day. On this occasion, they had a few special dishes native to Indonesia and also some that are generally available in South East Asian restaurants.

We went to one of their restaurants, P’Nut Zetland. The restaurant is located in the East Village shopping center in Zetland. Half of the restaurant was transformed into a cooking demo area and also some large tables for showcasing their dishes.

They had a few substantial dishes: Beef Rendang, gado-gado and nasi goreng served in a cute mini wok.

P’Nut Zetland also showcased some of their mainstays in the restaurant like prawn dumplings, spicy fried chicken, mee goreng and pad see ew.

These next two dishes weren’t exactly part of the offerings from P’Nut. They were brought in by the Indonesian Consulate.

Two famous Indonesian snacks: Martabak and Terang Bulan (some also called it Sweet Martabak). Maybe ‘snack’ is a bit deceiving as both were super filling. You might know martabak in different shape and form as they are usually available in an Indian restaurant.

Terang bulan is more like a thick pancake with mouth-watering toppings like chocolate and cheese.

    P’Nut Zetland cooking demonstration

To close out the event, chef P’Nut performed a cooking demonstration of an Indonesian favourite: Nasi goreng.

He masterfully showed us how to create a restaurant-grade nasi goreng pretty much from scratch!

The consulate also enlisted the help of an Indonesian Chef, Harjo from Medan Ciak. He created one of my favourite Indonesian desserts: Klepon.

Klepon is a sweet rice balls (like a mochi) with coconut and palm sugar. He gave us a few handy tips on how to make the best (well, in our case, a more edible) klepon!

I must say this is one of the most interesting invitation I have ever attended. In addition to showcasing what they have, P’Nut Zetland is also embracing the diversity of Indonesian dishes.

  • Sansu Yuzu

    Sansu Yuzu

    Product Review – Sansu Yuzu

    Sansu Yuzu

    What is Yuzu?

To be honest, I am not sure what it is and I have never seen the actual Yuzu fruit. Borrowing from Wikipedia, Yuzu’s point of origin is the East Asian region and it is believed to be a hybrid of sour mandarin and Ichang papeda.

My first exposure to Yuzu drink was when I went to a Japanese restaurant with the same name in Pyrmont a few years ago. At that time, I ordered the Yuzu tea and I instantly fell in love with Yuzu. These days, I am always interested in ordering dishes/drinks with Yuzu in it, if available.

A little blurp from the maker

Sansu are the first company in the world to offer Yuzu as ready-to-drink fruit drink – allowing you to enjoy Yuzu anywhere. Its intense flavour is the perfect accompaniment to any meal and a great alternative to alcohol.

With bumpy curves and a tangy taste, a hybrid of a lemon and grapefruit, Yuzu offers an intense citrus flavour with unique floral undertones. It has three times the Vitamin C of an orange and an abundance of flavonoids that act as powerful antioxidants. Its taste is powerful, with rich aromatic notes. It is both a delicate and refreshing flavour.

Yuzu’s scarce production quantity and high costs have limited its usage. However, Sansu has made this rare, exquisite fruit more accessible in a ready-to-drink format. Sansu fruit drinks were first launched in London in 2014 to introduce Yuzu to a new audience. It has rapidly grown in popularity and is now stocked in leading retailers, restaurants, cafes and bars across the UK.

All the juice ingredients are not from concentrate. All flavours are sweetened with grape juice and there is no added sugar, preservatives, flavourings or colourings. Sansu fruit drinks are available in four delicious flavours:

    • Original
    • Yuzu and Blackberry
    • Yuzu and Pear
    • Yuzu and Pink Guava

    Sansu Yuzu

    How does it taste?

They are actually pretty sour with only a hint of sweetness. The original Yuzu is our most favourite from the four.

The ones with pear and pink guava actually overpower the Yuzu flavour. So, those two taste more like pear and pink guava respectively.

  • Surjit’s Indian Experience with EatNow

    Surjit’s Indian Experience with EatNow

For this week, I was invited by EatNow to try their online takeaway and delivery services. This will also be our first take away review ever! As we feel like eating Indian cuisine, we made an order from Surjit’s Indian restaurant from their Sydney CBD Food delivery page. We also order a few starters and drinks from Cellarbrations.

    EatNow

    Surjit’s Indian Restaurant

We made the decision to go with Surjit’s as it was one of the better ones according to some of the review sites. The good thing about having Indian (or to some extent Thai) food for takeaway is that you can simply reheat the food without losing too much of the beautiful texture and flavour.

After around half an hour wait past the scheduled delivery, the food arrived! For our entrees we ordered Surjits Onion Bhajia and Vegetable Samosa. The entrees were complemented by cucumber and mint raita. I love how the raita soothed the rather spicy taste of the samosa. The Bhajia is not as crunchy as I would have hoped for.

For our main courses we had Murg Mumtaz Begun (Butter Chicken) and Korma Zaffar Shahi Beef. I wanted to try the mild option, for obvious reasons!  The takeaway containers were a bit messy but the taste was nice for the price that they are charging.

Obviously, you need naan to accompany your Indian dishes. There are quite a few options available, and for the day we had Garlic Naan, Keema Naan, and Plain Naan. Keema naan was probably the only thing I haven’t tried before. It was a lot heavier than the other types of naan.

The overall taste of Surjit’s dishes was quite spicy but it was still something that I can enjoy.

    Drinks and Starters from Cellarbrations

If you want to spice up your evening (pardon the pun!), there are quite a few beverages and starters ordering options in EatNow.

Capi Blood Oranges, Duck pate, Camembert, Sun-dried tomato and Baby Octopus

    Wines from Cellarbrations

I actually find this service to be pretty useful, especially when you need the items ASAP but you do not have the time to actually go to the shop yourself. Obviously for alcoholic delivery, you have to be over the age of 18.

    Product Review

    Planet Popcorn

Around mid-January, I received an email with a header: We want to send your our Popcorn. I was so tempted to say ‘What are you waiting for?’. However, I am not used to the idea of a product review and have never really done it before.

Long story short, a box of popcorn with six different flavours arrived at my office and the fun started!

Obviously the first one to go was the Original Planet Popcorn as you want to know how ‘the original’ is supposed to taste. The popcorns were a bit bigger than your usual cinema popcorn and they were very round (like a planet !). The Corn Soup popcorns had a well-balanced flavours. However, I find the name ‘corn soup popcorn’ has a bit more corn than it’s supposed to…maybe some fancy name like ‘salt and sugar popcorn’ suits better 🙂

The next two flavours were more on the spicy side. Basil Chicken and Kimchi. It was actually pretty spicy when compared to your normal snacks. My partner is a huge fan of spicy food and quite a hater of snacks. However, she enjoyed the Kimchi popcorn so much that she actually could not wait Planet Popcorn to officially open in Australia!

    Basil Chicken Back

Then we have the ‘dessert’ type popcorn: Double Chocolate – Premium limited edition put it in the fridge to get the best taste – and Coffee.

These two were more in the sweet side of the spectrum. Double chocolate is supposedly the premium limited edition variant. However, I am not really a big fan of chocolate, so I’m not sure whether I should talk about Double Chocolate.

My Personal Favourite: Corn Soup! I think the Corn Soup flavour from Planet Popcorn has the right combination of sweet and salt.
