All about food blog categorises Steak on its own since most steakhouses do not have association to a particular country in terms of the steak they serve.

    Butcher and the Farmer

    Butcher and the Farmer Review:

We went to butcher and the farmer because our little one saw the tram that we could dine in when we first visited Glebe Tramsheds.

The menu is predominantly showcasing different (steak) cuts from different parts of the country.

Steak Tartare with traditional garnishes – $18

It was quite a boring-looking steak tartare. It was pretty decent but definitely not the best out there.

Smoked Beef Short Rib 2 year old grass fed Angus – $37

I love their short rib! I think this is the dish worth coming back for.

Also, it’s worth noting that (just like in other fancy steakhouses), their steak does not come with side dishes and condiments. You have to order them separately.

    Butcher and the farmer Ribs

Grilled Asparagus with lemon and parsley – $8

Grilled asparagus was one of the side dishes we ordered that day. There wasn’t anything worth noting.

    Chips – $6

We consider chips to be an integral part of dining experience in great steakhouses. Considering that these restaurants have top-of-the-range cuts, poorly-made chips could ruin the overall dining experience.

I think the chips could carry its own weight.

Spit Roast of the Day 350gr – $25

The spit roast of that day was lamb. It was beautiful. Also, I think it was the best value for your money in the restaurant.

Kids fish and chips – $10

It is probably one of the fanciest fish and chips for kids I’ve ever seen. Instead of battered fish, it was grilled fish.

The final verdict for Buther and the Farmer

Dining in a tram is a big plus for kids (and adults alike!). We are happy that Butcher and the farmer also has nice and reasonably-priced dishes to go with it.

    Did you know?

Jumping into their website, I could see a few different menu items for different occasions. They are also open from 8 am – 10 pm 7 days a week. That’s quite a long opening hours!

Pancakes on The Rocks Beverly Hills

    Pancakes on The Rocks Review:

Almost seven years ago, I wrote my very first article on All About Food Blog. The article was about Pancakes on The Rocks at its original place at The Rocks, Sydney. The restaurant is now more like a chain restaurant with seven restaurants spread across Sydney and Gold Coast. Pancakes on The Rocks Beverly Hills was quite full when we got there and we were there for early dinner.

Calamari – $9.95 – Crumbed and deep fried, served with tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon.

This calamari is quite possibly the worst dish that you can ever order in Pancakes on The Rocks. If you want something to share at the beginning, I suggest having the wedges or nachos.

    z1-calamari

Mexicana – $15.95 – Spicy Mexican beef sauce, spicy Tomato salsa, special tomato sauce, tasty cheese, guacamole, sour cream and shallots, served on a bed of mixed lettuce….. One of our best sellers!

Crepes is one of their main attractions at the restaurant. Mexicana is my friend’s favourite there. It was pretty refreshing.

    z4-crepe

Beef Ribs – $35.95 – Tender and juicy marinated and grilled in tangy barbeque sauce. Served with golden potato wedges and mixed lettuce. Add sweet chilli $2.00 Add sour cream $2.00

The price of beef ribs has increased by around $10 from when I started writing food blog. Unfortunately, this increase in price is not followed by increase in portion size nor increase in quality. The only difference was the wedges. Instead of the fluffy wedges, they now had this curly wedges. We were quite unsure about the shape, but it turned out to be better than the fluffy ones.

    z2-ribs

    z2a-ribs

The Ultimate – $15.95 – Crepes filled with cream cheese and sultanas, served with raspberry coulis and vanilla ice cream.

The ultimate is probably the only reason why I kept coming back to Pancakes on The Rocks. As the name suggested.. it’s THE ULTIMATE!

The Ultimate from Pancakes on The Rocks Beverly Hills

The final verdict for Pancakes on The Rocks Beverly Hills

I guess 6 years without any meaningful updates to the menu did not really hurt the number of customers visiting Pancakes on The Rocks. However, it was probably my least favourite branch so far.

  • The Cut Bar and Grill

    The Cut Bar and Grill

    Review:

When people talk about the best steakhouse in Sydney, you will always hear The Cut Bar and Grill as one of them. That’s why when a group of friends from overseas came to visit and wanted to try the famous Australian steak, I dared myself to take them there. It was sort of a gamble for me as I personally haven’t tried it before and I would really hate to have over-hyped and overpriced steakhouse.

There were eight of us and was one day before New Year’s Eve. I actually did not expect to be able to get a seat at The Cut. However, long story short, we were seated (and possibly the most underdressed bunch ever set foot in the restaurant).

As if the square boxes on the menu are not clear enough for you, I’ll make it clearer: when you are in the restaurant, ORDER A STEAK!

They have quite a large range of cuts with marble score ranging from 2 to 9+ (translate: If it is cooked properly, it is so friggen’ good!).

The Cut Bar and Grill Menu

Côte de Bœuf – $145 – 1kg Grasslands Grass Fed served with two sides and two sauces

This steak is (supposed to be) designed for two people. It also comes with two sides and two sauces – that’s a $30 value!

When the steak arrived, it was eye-catching, looked juicy and perfect.

However, we seriously doubted that it was 1kg… or the fat was probably burned down by the 650ºC Broiler. In the end, we felt that one of us could finish this easily by ourselves.

Côte de Bœuf - $145 – 1kg Grasslands Grass Fed served with two sides and two sauces

    Signature Upper Cut – $65 – 400g 4-hour slow roast F1 Wagyu Standing Rib

The 400g was ordered by our other friend. However, the funny thing was that it looked bigger than our 1kg steak!

I did try the steak from my friend and it was pretty amazing. My friend even said that this was “The Best Steak in my life”.

    Signature Upper Cut - $65 – 400g 4-hour slow roast F1 Wagyu Standing Rib

Flat Iron Steak “The Butchers Cut” – $43 – 250g Rangers Valley Pure Black Angus MS 3-5

It looked pretty sad and small on that big plate. However, we have to consider that it’s only 250g.

Flat Iron Steak “The Butchers Cut” - $43 – 250g Rangers Valley Pure Black Angus MS 3-5

Sauces – $4 – Bearnaise, Chimichurri, House Steak Sauce, Mushroom, Shallot Red Wine Bordelaise

I was actually quite intrigue with the chimichurri, but in the end we opted for House Steak Sauce and Bordelaise. I liked the house steak sauce better than the bordelaise.

    Whipped Potato – $10

Cauliflower, Blue Cheese Dressing – $12

These two were the extras we ordered with our steak. We were also considering Rocket salad (my favourite vegetables), but the blue cheese dressing eventually got my vote.

Whipped Potato - $10 Cauliflower, Blue Cheese Dressing - $12

Roasted Button Mushrooms, Thyme, Smoked Speck – $13

It’s a nice and quite complex mushrooms side dish.

Roasted Button Mushrooms, Thyme, Smoked Speck - $13

2013 Yellands & Papps Vin de Soif Grenache Mataro, Barossa Valley – $59

They have a good range of wines. My friend selected this for the group.

2013 Yellands & Papps Vin de Soif Grenache Mataro, Barossa Valley - $59

The final verdict for The Cut Bar and Grill

My guests were very impressed with the quality presented at The Cut Bar and Grill… and I agreed.

    Did you know?

For those of you who got outvoted into this restaurant, they do have non-steak dishes as appetizers and mains. They also have a selection of desserts.

  • Hurricane’s Darling Harbour

    Hurricane’s Darling Harbour

    Review:

The original Hurricane’s Grill in Bondi was the second review I wrote back in 2010. Back then, the Darling Harbour’s branch had been opened, but people were still queuing in the Bondi Beach Venue. In 2015, they have 4 Hurricane’s Grill and 2 Hurricane’s Express restaurants.

The Hurricane’s Darling Harbour venue is probably the one I go to the most for convenience purpose. It is still a very popular venue, so go early or expect a queue!

Rocket and Parmigiano Salad – $19.00 – with cherry tomatoes, green olives and red onion with vinaigrette dressing

Rocket is one of only few vegetables that I actually love. Nothing can go wrong with rocket and parmigiano cheese!

Rocket and Parmigiano Salad - $19.00
Rocket and Parmigiano Salad – $19.00

Op Prime Rib (500gm) – $48.00 – grain fed, prime rib on the bone; one of our finest cuts

As we had quite a large group, I got the chance to try a ‘non-standard’ dish. On this occasion I ordered Hurricane’s Prime Rib… for myself!

It was a pretty good steak… However, considering that it was more expensive than full rack of beef or lamb ribs, I think I’ll choose those two anytime!

    Op Prime Rib (500gm) - $48.00
    Op Prime Rib (500gm) – $48.00

Full rack of Beef Ribs – $47.00 – basted in Hurricane’s rib basting then grilled until tender served with either chips or baked potato with sour cream and chives.

Hurricane’s ribs are the main reason why people visit Hurricane’s Darling Harbour. When I wrote the review 5 years ago, they didn’t have the beef ribs on the menu. So, this is for those of you who are not a big fan of either lamb or pork ribs.

Full rack of Beef Ribs - $47.00
Full rack of Beef Ribs – $47.00

Rump (750gm) – $48.00 – the original “BIG KAHUNA”, aged for a minimum of 28 days and basted in Hurricane’s steak basting.

Rump steak is my father’s favourite cut. 750 gr of rump steak is huge… no joke!

Depending on how big the group is, you can also opt for 350 gr or (an even bigger) 1 kg of rump steak. You can also order extra sauce (e.g. mushroom) for $2.50.

    Rump (750gm) - $48.00
    Rump (750gm) – $48.00

    Onion Rings

I am not sure why they did not put this in the menu. However, you can order onion rings in Hurricane’s Darling Harbour.

    Onion Rings

    Junior Fish and Chips

It was a simple fish and chips with tartare sauce and lemon for kids. Suffice to say that the little guy enjoyed the main dish that we ordered better than his.

    Junior Fish and Chips

The final verdict for Hurricane’s Darling Harbour

Hurricane’s Darling Harbour is a lot more convenient meeting place than the one in Bondi Beach with the same quality that you would expect from Hurricane’s.

    Did you know?

I was going to review Hurricane’s Express in Waterloo, before I found out at the last minute that they closed down a week after my visit to the restaurant!

  • Chophouse

    Chophouse

    Review:

I wanted to take a couple of VIPs from overseas to enjoy Australian beef. I have heard that Chophouse was one of the best steakhouse in town. So naturally, Chophouse was our choice for enjoying the beautiful Australian beef.

Looking at the menu, they have cuts that you will most likely not find in your local butcher. So, we were pretty happy with the prospect of having quality food for dinner.

    Chophouse Menu

The night started off wonderfully with two beautiful starters:

Crisp Zucchini Flowers with prawn mousse, and Romesco sauce – $21.90

There were three golden zucchini flowers with beautiful prawn fillings.

    z1-Crisp-Zucchini-Flowers-2190

Flash Fried Prawns & Calamari with Aioli – $17.50

Despite looking like an ordinary salt and pepper calamari, they were nothing but ordinary.

Flash Fried Prawns & Calamari with Aioli - $17.50

    Something Fishy

It is actually one of the names for the kid’s menu. It was a deep fried fish fillet with steamed greens. The fish was way too overcooked. The little guy did not want to finish it (and I didn’t blame him). The good thing about it was that it was FREE of charge!

    Something Fishy

After quite a long wait, with a few guests that came around the same time as us already paid their bills, our main course arrived. On a side note, the complimentary bread actually managed to keep my tummy busy while waiting for the main course.

The Glazed Beef Short Rib with house made BBQ sauce (350gr) – $36.00

Obviously when you are at one of the best steakhouses, you will want to try the best item (usually the most expensive one?) on their ‘signatures’ range. This short rib was the one. It was the dish I originally ordered (and was subsequently halved and traded with the rump cap below).

The meat was incredibly tender and the BBQ sauce was nice.

The Glazed Beef Short Rib with house made BBQ sauce (350gr) - $36.00

Double Double Lamb Chops with mint jelly (2x180gr) – $30.90 – from Amelia Park, WA

I must admit that the double double lamb chops sounded very intriguing! However, my tummy said ‘no’ to the weight listed on the menu.

Double Double Lamb Chops with mint jelly (2x180gr) - $30.90 – from Amelia Park, WA

Wagyu Rump Cap, MB6+ with harissa and jus (200gr) – $39.00 – from FI, AACo, QLD

Wagyu rump cap was the best dish of the night for me. It was the smallest portion for the night and wasn’t the one I ordered (unfortunately!), but the steak was beautiful.

Wagyu Rump Cap, MB6+ with harissa and jus (200gr) - $39.00 – from FI, AACo, QLD

Wagyu Rump Cap, MB6+ with harissa and jus (200gr) - $39.00 – from FI, AACo, QLD

    The final verdict for Chophouse

Quality was definitely there when it comes down to the steak they served at Chophouse… as expected from quality meats! However, a very long break between the two courses and the fact that no one told us the steak did not come with any side dishes made our experience somewhat less satisfying.

    Did you know?

I was quite interested in their Tomahawks. However considering it weighed in excess of 1.5 kg, none of us dared to order it.

The side dishes cost from $9 to $25. So, in order to have a complete meal, you might need to add that cost into your main dish.

    Rating for Chophouse:

    7.5 / 10

    Taste: 8.0 / 10

  • The Gonis Schnitzelria

    The Gonis Schnitzelria

    Review:

The restaurant that we reviewed this week is pretty well-known for its Schnitzel. As a matter of fact, The Goni’s Schnitzelria owned the bragging rights to be the Biggest Schnitzel in Sydney, probably matched by the Schnitzel Challenge by Austrian Schnizelhaus.

    The Goni's Schnitzelria

Four of us arrived at the restaurant feeling quite hungry and we decided to order three schnitzels and a bowl of chips (note: the schnitzels don’t come with chips). We were contemplating on ordering two bowls of chips but were quickly stopped by the waitress. In the end I can understand if she might think we were crazy for trying to order three schnitzels and two bowls of chips.

    The Gonis Schnitzelria

When the first schnitzel arrived, we quickly realised our blunders. The Mediterranean Schnitzel was a gigantic slab with generous parmesan cheese poured over it. Mediterranean is a chicken schnitzel with garlic, basil, pine nuts and walnuts with béchamel sauce.

    Mediterranean Schnitzel - $24
    Mediterranean Schnitzel – $24

We ordered veal for our next schnitzel, Criolla Schnitzel. It was veal schnitzel with a homemade beef mince sauce, corn and garnished with fresh chilli and parsley.

    Criolla Schnitzel - $24
    Criolla Schnitzel – $24

Our last schnitzel used cream sauce instead of melted cheese. The Boscaiola Schnitzel came with peas, mushrooms and bacon. The last one looked and felt very heavy. It looked heavy even if we removed the schnitzel!

    Boscaiola Schnitzel - $24
    Boscaiola Schnitzel – $24
    Bowl of Chips - $6.50
    Bowl of Chips – $6.50

We left the restaurant with three aluminium baking trays filled with more than half of our leftovers.  Well, in the end, we know that we don’t have to cook any meals for the next couple of days!

The final verdict for The Goni’s Schnitzelria

Even with my love to eating big portions, I still could not finish even 40% of the schnitzel. That’s how big the portions were at The Goni’s Schnitzelria!

    Did you know?

There are quite a lot of eating challenges that you can do in Sydney if you particularly love challenges. You can read some of them from a post by I ate my way through.
