  • 2014 Tasty Takeaway Awards | Menulog

2014 Tasty Takeaway Awards | Menulog

Awards for fine dining are great – but most Australians don’t eat at expensive restaurants every day. What about some recognition for the little guys? What about your neighbourhood Indian restaurant, the local pizza place or the Chinese takeaway down the road?

Menulog’s annual Tasty Takeaway Awards aim to share some much-deserved glory with your favourite takeaway restaurants. The awards aren’t decided by an exclusive panel of culinary judges but directly by the customers. The food doesn’t need to be fancy or complicated; just good, comforting and consistently delicious.

Each year a national winner is chosen along with a handful of local favourite selected from a range of cuisines – which make the awards an excellent guide to the best takeaway restaurants all across the country. Here’s a quick dining guide to a handful of last year’s winners across Sydney.

    Eastern Suburbs

    Chilled Out Thai, Maroubra

    Chilled Out Thai

Thai food is one of Australia’s most popular takeaway cuisines and this local favourite delivers with excellent and colourful curries, stir fries and noodle dishes.

    Inner West

Erskineville Turkish Pide & Kebabs, Erskineville

    Erskineville Turkish Pide & Kebabs

As well as the must-try range of Turkish pide and kebabs, this main street restaurant also does classic hamburgers and pizza – and don’t miss out on the fantastic baklava.

    Sydney City

    Saigon Bay Vietnamese Restaurant, Darlinghurst

    beef stir fry

Healthy, flavourful Vietnamese has taken off in Sydney and this is one of the places leading the charge with fresh rice paper rolls, Vietnamese salads and mouth-watering hotpots.

    South

    Antonio’s Pizzeria, Caringbah

    Antonio's Pizzeria

In a crowded market it takes a pretty amazing pizza joint to rise above the rest. Antonio’s uses quality ingredients to bring life to simple, delicious flavour combinations.

    North Shore

    Bay Tandoori, Waverton

    Indian Chicken Vindaloo Curry

Beautiful curries and vegetable dishes make Bay Tandoori a winner. The food is wonderfully spiced and hearty – as good Indian should be.

  • The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

The award season is here! It is the world’s 50 best restaurants 2014. To be named in this site as the world’s 50 best restaurants is probably the highest accomplishment a chef can get.

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

Despite a different winner, there were no surprises in the Top 3 list this year. Noma reclaimed the top spot as the best restaurant in the world. This Danish restaurant came up second last year but winner of the previous three. El Celler De Can Roca from Spain was knocked back to number two. Osteria Francescana from Italy is the third best for the last two years.

    Australia’s best restaurants in 2014

Despite falling 11 places to number 32, Attica from Melbourne is still the best restaurant in Australia. Attica is also the only Australian restaurant in this 50 best restaurants list. This year, they even won the Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in Australasia.

Quay, the only restaurant that all about food blog has reviewed, fell 12 spots to number 60.

    Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

As a spin-off to the list, they also produced the 50 best restaurants list for Asian region.

This year’s top Asia 50 best restaurants is Nahm from Bangkok, Thailand. Last year’s winner, Narisawa, got the runner up position. Interestingly, Nahm became the top restaurant in Thailand after being the first (and only?) Thai restaurant in London to receive a Michelin star.

    Indonesia’s best restaurant in 2014

As an Indonesian descent, I am happy to know that  one Indonesian restaurant in on the list! Sarong Restaurant Bali was listed at number 47 in the Asia’s 50 best restaurants 2014. Founder chef, Will Meyrick, was known to be an apprentice for Gordon Ramsay. He used to own Longrain restaurant in Sydney. Looking briefly at the menu, it looked like a mishmash of Asian food.

  • 50 best restaurants in the world 2013

50 best restaurants in the world 2013

50 best restaurants in the world 2013 has a new winner in 2013.

50 best restaurants in the world 2013

El Celler De Can Roca of Spain has dethroned the top restaurant for the last three years, Noma of Denmark. Originally from Girona, Spain, El Celler De Can Roca is not an anonymous name. Spearheaded by chef Joan Roca (with his two brothers), they’ve been a runner up to Noma for the last two years. They have also been in the list for the last eight years and steadily climbing up the ladder. According to theworlds50best.com, eating at El Celler is truly uplifting, with the warmth of the family dynamic all-pervasive.

I am actually more suprised by Attica‘s rise to prominence. Attica is Australia’s Top restaurant in 2013 and is located in Melbourne, Victoria. They are the highest new entry for the year at number 21. In 2012, Attica was only sitting at number 63, well below Quay at 29 and Marque at 61. This year Quay is still on the list at number 48, while Marque and Tetsuya are out of top 100. Sydney’s top restaurant according Good Food Guide, Momofuku Seiobo, is the only other Australian restaurant in top 100 at number 89.

50 best restaurants in the world 2013 in Asia

Asia’s top restaurant is Narisawa from Tokyo, Japan. Named after its head chef, Yoshihiro Narisawa, this restaurant has a French technique with Japanese ingredients. Tetsuya’s other restaurant, Waku Ghin of Singapore, is sitting at number 11 on the list.

Surprisingly, my home country has ONE restaurant in the top 50 Asian restaurants called Mozaic in Bali. It is located in Jl. Raya Sanggingan, Ubud, Gianyar – Bali 80571. The restaurant is described as Franco-Indonesian, a fusion of French and Indonesian cuisines. Its current signature dishes are suckling pork with pig’s trotter ravioli and babi guling emulsion.

This is one restaurant I will definitely go to test! 🙂
