  • Good Food Guide 2020

    Good Food Guide 2020

    The Good Food website published the Good Food Guide 2020 on the 30th of September 2019. The guide celebrates the best restaurants in Australia.

    The winner of this year’s good food guide restaurant of the year is BRAE in Birregurra, Victoria. They are also sitting at #101 in the world’s 50 best restaurants list. Last year in the Good Food Guide 2019, Brae received the award for Regional Restaurant of the year.

    Other Awards in this year’s Good Food Guide 2020

    Best new restaurant of the year is JOY in Brisbane, Queensland, by Sarah and Tim Scott.

    Lennox Hastie from Firedoor in NSW has won the Chef of The Year award.

    Pipit in Pottsville, NSW, was awarded the Regional Restaurant of the Year in 2019. Its head chef is Ben Devlin.

    Maggie Beer from South Australia received the Legend Award.

    Young Chef of the year award was given to Anna Ugarte-Carral from Momofuku Seiobo in NSW.

    Joanna Smith (Igni, Geelong, Victoria) won the Service Excellence Award.

    Food for Good award went to National Indigenous Culinary Institute in NSW and VIC. This institute guaranteed jobs for indigenous chefs upon completion of the program.

    Bar of the year is Bar Margaux in Melbourne, Victoria.

    Sommelier of the year went to Forbes Appleby from Franklin in Hobart, Tasmania.

    If you want a good wine, you should go to Yellow in Sydney as they won this year’s Wine List of the year.

    The regional wine list of the year went to FermentAsian in Tanunda, South Australia.

    Three hats

    There are two restaurants in NSW awarded with three hats as listed in the Good Food Guide 2020 website:

    • Quay – We have yet to try Quay’s new, post-snow-egg menu.
    • Sixpenny – We went to sixpenny in 2018 and it was one of the best dining experience.

    The same three restaurants as the last 2 years (Attica, Brae, Minamishima) in Victoria and Restaurant Orana in South Australia also received three hat status.

    Good Food Guide 2019

    Good Food Guide 2019 is upon us! This is the second year that they do the award nationally.

    The winner of this year’s good food guide restaurant of the year is Restaurant Orana in Adelaide, South Australia.

    Other Awards in this year’s Good Food Guide 2019

    Best new restaurant of the year is Laura at Point Leo Estate in Victoria by Phil Wood.

    Peter Gilmore from Quay in NSW has won the Chef of The Year award. Quay is a three-chef-hat restaurant 17 years in a row!

    Brae in Victoria was awarded the Regional Restaurant of the Year in 2019. Its head chef is Dan Hunter.

    Stefano de Pieri from Stefano’s Cantina in Victoria received the Legend Award.

    Young Chef of the year award was given to Jodie Odrowaz from Iki Jime in Victoria.

    Kylie Javier Ashton (Momofuku Seiobo, Sydney) won the Service Excellence Award.

    Food for Good award was given to #SydneyDoesntSuck campaign by the City of Sydney. This campaign aims at reducing plastic straws in Sydney.

    Bar of the year is The Dolphin Wine Room in NSW.

    Sommelier of the year went to Travis Howe from Carlton Wine Room in Victoria.

    If you want a good wine, you should go to Otto Brisbane in Queensland as they won this year’s Wine List of the year.

    The regional wine list of the year went to Wickens at the Royal Mail in Dunkeld, Victoria.

    There are three restaurants in NSW awarded with three hats as listed in the Good Food Guide 2019 website:

    • Quay – 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2013. Quay’s chef, Peter Gilmore, won this year’s Chef of the year.
    • Momofuku Seiobo.
    • Sixpenny.  We went to sixpenny earlier this year and it was so far the best restaurant we went to this year.

    2018 Top 100 Restaurants in Australia by Financial Review

    Last week, the Australian Financial Review published the 2018 Top 100 restaurants in Australia. Instead of being judged by food critics/food bloggers/some random people, the list was actually made by the top 500 chefs in Australia. Being at the top of the list means that your peers agreed that your restaurant is the best in Australia. I am pretty sure that’s the best recognition that you could possibly get.

    Brae is at the top of this list of 2018 Top 100 Restaurants in Australia. Australia’s Top Chef award is given to chef Josh Niland from Saint Peter in Paddington in New South Wales.

    Good Food Guide 2018

    Good Food Guide 2018 introduced a massive change where instead of statewide list, it is now a National list. Hence, the winner might not necessarily be from New South Wales.

    The winner of this inaugural format is Attica in Victoria.

    Best new restaurant of the year is Saint Peter in NSW by Josh Niland. They are coming in to the list as a two-hat restaurant.

    Daniel Puskas from Sixpenny in NSW has won the Chef of The Year award. Sixpenny is a two-hat restaurant.

    The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery & Store in Tasmania was awarded the Regional Restaurant of the Year in 2018. Its head chefs are Rodney Dunn and Severine Demanet.

    The late Jeremy Strode received the Legend Award.

    Young Chef of the year award was given to Kylie Millar from Attica in Victoria.

    Nikki Friedli (Africola, South Australia) won the Service Excellence Award.

    Food for Good award was given to Orana Foundation in South Australia. This award combined innovation, charity and sustainability.

    If you want a good wine, you should go to Aria Brisbane in Queensland as they won this year’s Wine List of the year.

    Sommelier of the year went to Raul Moreno Yague from Osteria Ilaria in Victoria.

    Best Bar Food can be found in Bar Brosé.

    Best Bar is Arlechin in Victoria.

    Regional Wine List of the Year went to The Summertown Aristologist in South Australia.

    SMH Good Food Guide 2017

    Peter Gilmore’s flagship restaurant has done it again in Good Food Guide 2017! For the umpteenth time, Quay is the restaurant of the year.

    Best new restaurant of the year is Restaurant Hubert by Dan Pepperell. They are coming in to the list as a two-hat restaurant.

    Federico Zanellato from LuMi Bar & Dining has won the Chef of The Year award. LuMi Bar & Dining is a two-hat restaurant.

    Paper Daisy in Cabarita Beach was awarded the Regional Restaurant of the Year in 2017. Its head chef is Ben Devlin.

    Leon Fink received the Legend Award.

    Young Chef of the year award was given to Noel Jelfs from Eleven Bridge.

    Astrid McCormack (Fleet) won the Service Excellence Award.

    Food for Good award was given to Ravi and Della Prasad from Parliament on King. This award combined innovation, charity and sustainability.

    If you want a good wine, you should go to Monopole as they won this year’s Wine List of the year.

    Sommelier of the year went to Tim Watkins from Automata.

    Best Bar Food can be found in Bar Brosé.

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016

    For the first time in what feels like an eternity, Noma from Denmark is not featured in the top three. In fact they dropped down to number 5. The top restaurant for this year was last year’s runner up, Osteria Francescana from Modena, Italy. Last year’s winner, El Celler de Can Roca from Girona Spain, is now the runner up. Second runner up belongs to Eleven Madison Park in New York, USA.

    Australian Restaurants in the 50 best restaurants 2016

    It is becoming an annual event that Attica from Melbourne is the only restaurant from Australia included in the 50 best restaurants list. Their ranking is pretty steady at 33.

    There are only two other Australian restaurants in the top 100 list:

    – Brae at 65. Brae is a countryside restaurant in Birregurra, Victoria. According to the 2006 census, Birregurra was only inhabited by 688 people!

    Quay at 98. Quay is still the only restaurant in the list that we have visited and they have been sliding down consistently.

    The list for the top four restaurants in Australia  is very similar to the one voted by Australian chefs in Financial Review.

    Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016

    Asia’s top restaurant according to the list is Narisawa in Tokyo, Japan. However, according to a separate list from the same publisher, called Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016, Gaggan from Bangkok is #1. Gaggan was third best in the main list after Narisawa and Amber in Hong Kong.

    Indonesia’s best restaurant in 2016

    Indonesia was represented by one restaurant at number 49 for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016. The restaurant is called Locavore in Ubud, Bali.
