    2018 Top 100 Restaurants in Australia by Financial Review

    Last week, the Australian Financial Review published the 2018 Top 100 restaurants in Australia. Instead of being judged by food critics/food bloggers/some random people, the list was actually made by the top 500 chefs in Australia. Being at the top of the list means that your peers agreed that your restaurant is the best in Australia. I am pretty sure that’s the best recognition that you could possibly get.

    Brae is at the top of this list of 2018 Top 100 Restaurants in Australia. Australia’s Top Chef award is given to chef Josh Niland from Saint Peter in Paddington in New South Wales.

    Bakhtar Restaurant Review:

    We went quite a way to the West in Liverpool this week. The original purpose was to catch the elusive Bearded Bakers’ Knafeh. Before we went there, we had to make a stop to have dinner. Our choice of restaurant is from the same region. The restaurant is called Bakhtar.

    Entree

    The restaurant gave us a complimentary entree, some kind of thick soup with noodles. They mentioned it was the special thing they do because it was the holy month of Ramadan. It was quite a rich soup and pretty tasty.

    Mantoo – $11.99 – Steamed lamb mince dumplings topped with yoghurt and lentils

    We fell in love with mantoo when we tried the dish at an Afghani restaurant in Five Dock. So, when I saw the dish on the menu that night, I was so eager to try. The mantoo at Bakhtar was very nice and very affordable. The portion was also pretty big for one person to have.

    The Kebab Banquet

    I didn’t manage to remember how much this would cost but eventually, the total cost for the five of us is less than $100.

    The kebab banquet consists of three different kinds of rice, six skewers of meat (three of each: chicken, beef, and minced lamb) and some side vegetables. It was a feast! There was so much rice and massive pieces of meat on the plate. We were quite impressed with the bountiful of food.

    We also ordered some stewed vegetables that we could dip into. So it’s kinda like a dipping soup vegetables.

    Bakhtar Restaurant gave you a nice value for money meal.

    Do you think I should go?

    If you live around the area, Bakhtar is quite a decent place for a quick and cheap meal.

    Do Dee Paidang

    Do Dee Paidang Review:

    There are probably more than 1,000 Thai restaurants in Sydney. So, if a Thai restaurant is getting noticed, they must be doing something right. That’s how I came across Do Dee Paidang. A friend of mine at work had been raving about it for years but I didn’t manage to go as we very rarely go to Sydney CBD.

    If you are walking around Chinatown, you will not miss this restaurant’s bright red signage. There were usually queues outside the restaurant as well. Fortunately, we were quite early and could get a seat without waiting (despite the restaurant being almost full at that time). The specialty at Do Dee Paidang was their soup. We couldn’t order them this time around as some of us did not eat pork.

    Som Tum Thai Pu – $13.90 – Green papaya mixed with chilli, tomatoes, lime juice, fish sauce, palm sugar, dried shrimps, and pickled crab.

    Som Tum is the Thai green papaya salad. Traditionally they are very spicy…. and that’s what we got here! The one interesting thing about this salad is that you can add pickled crab. Pickled crab is quite an acquired taste as it can be super sour and super crunchy. It’s not actually a soft shell crab, so the shell is pretty crunchy.

    Pad See Ew Chicken – $9.90

    Pad see ew chicken is our personal staple as the little one ALWAYS wants to order one when we are in a Thai restaurant. Pad see ew is the Thai version of Malay’s char kwetiau. It is basically stir-fried rice noodles with sweet soy sauce. The dish was super simple, not spicy and usually loved by children.

    Deep Fried Chicken Rice – $9.90

    I usually love crispy, deep-fried chicken with rice. Unfortunately, their deep fried chicken was a tad too oily to my liking.

    Keaw Tod – $3 / skewer

    This quail egg wrapped in a deep-fried wonton on a skewer became our instant favourite. It was quite a yummy snack to have.

    Pa Tong Go – $5.50

    Pa tong go is my #1 favourite in a Thai restaurant. It is basically a derivative of Chinese doughnut (Youtiao) served with sweet pandan dipping sauce. I thought their pa tong go was pretty well made and not as oily as the chicken.

    Nom Yen, Cha Yen – $4.50

    When you are in a Thai restaurant, don’t forget to order either the Thai iced tea or the (super sweet) pink milk tea.

    The final verdict for Do Dee Paidang

    Do dee paidang provides a low-cost Thai restaurant without sacrificing taste.

    Do you think I should go?

    For years, I’ve always been a fan of one particular Thai restaurant. However, they have shifted to a more upmarket-y Thai restaurant. Do Dee is the cheap and cheerful option with same great taste!

    Also, I know I didn’t write about it here, but they are famous for their soup!

  • Solo Newtown –  Brunch

    Solo Newtown – Brunch

    Solo Newtown Review:

    When you heard the name ‘Solo’, most of you would probably associate it with the word ‘single’ or with that Star Wars movie that everyone talked about (for probably the wrong reasons). However, Solo Newtown is an Indonesian restaurant based in Newtown that took its name from a city in Indonesia, Solo – shortened version of Surakarta. Surakarta is a city filled with rich history and traditional cuisines. We have written about the city of Solo and its culinary options last year.

    Their menu is separated into three different lot: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As we visited Solo Newtown at around lunchtime, we were ordering from the breakfast and lunch menu. Their breakfast menu is quite a full-on Australian breakfast menu with only bits of Indonesian influence. Conversely, their brunch/lunch menu is more like an Indonesian lunch with nasi goreng, lodeh, and gado-gado as part of the selections.

    Nasi goreng – $14.90 – made with spicy basmati rice, tempeh, vegetables and topped with fried eggs

    Nasi goreng, or fried rice, is almost a staple in quite a lot of Indonesian restaurants. One thing really stood out for me was the use of basmati, instead of jasmine, rice for the nasi goreng. As a result, the fried rice was quite a dry one, but probably easier to style on the plate.

    Add New York Pastrami – $6

    If you require more meat, they give an option to add a plate of New York pastrami. It was quite an interesting add-on to a plate of fried rice.

    Beef Rendang Jaffle – $14 – Beef Rendang, spring onions & cheese

    The one thing that really caught my eyes was the beef rendang jaffle. One element that stood out here was the cheese. I know it’s the ‘traditional’ way with jaffle. However, it has never been a staple in rendang. What you get is this crispy, cheesy, spicy, heavy jaffle. It’s a great way to fill up at lunchtime.

    Also, this would certainly appease the needs of that masterchef judge for a crispy rendang.

    Latte – $4

    There is one item on the menu that is quite interesting: turmeric latte. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling too adventurous for it. Instead, I ordered a normal latte.

    Others

    Their dinner menu has a lot more Indonesian-influenced dishes. They have things from Indonesian grilled chicken, beef ribs, and other delicacies.

    I will probably visit them in the future to review their dinner menu.

    The final verdict for Solo Newtown

    Hat’s off for the guys at Solo Newtown! They dare to transform traditional Indonesian cuisine to a more contemporary look. I’m not sure if the ‘purist’ will like it as much as we do though.

    Indonesian food is probably not as famous as Thai or Japanese in Sydney. However, if you want to try Indonesian flavour in dishes you already recognise, Solo might be the one for you.

  • Daijobu Japanese BBQ

    Daijobu Japanese BBQ

    Daijobu Japanese BBQ Review:

    Daijobu is a new-ish restaurant on the frontcourt of Ashfield shopping centre. Their menu offering is somewhat a mixture of Korean and Japanese dishes with mainly BBQ dishes. Later on, they added sushi to the menu.

    Daijobu DoMoDaChi Set menu – $65 – Special Wagyu Karubi Plate (14.9), Premium Wagyu Rib Finger(12.9), Pork Toro (9.9), Hot Pot Bibimbap (13.5), Assorted Kimchi (9.9), Edamame (6), Corn with Butter Foil (4.9)

    The set menu is quite a nice option to have if you don’t know what to order. They have three different kinds of meat and three different kinds of vegetables. Interestingly, the set menu also comes with a hot pot bibimbap.

    The set menu can probably be enjoyed by two or three people.

    Hot Pot Bibimbap bowl – $13.5 – Assorted veggies and teriyaki beef on top of rice in a hot stone pot

    Special Yukke – $9.9 – Fresh Raw Beef sashimi served with homemade soy sauce and egg yolk

    Since I first started tasting it, I have always been in love with yukke. I usually will try to order them whenever I get the chance. Unfortunately, the yukke served at Daijobu was frozen.

    Bento Box – $13.90

    If BBQ is not your thing, they also offer the bento box menu. The teriyaki chicken bento box has quite a lot of variety on it.

    Lobster Sushi Roll

    This menu was not available when we were there the first time. It is actually quite a nice addition to the menu. However, it’s not technically in the spirit of ‘Japanese BBQ’ theme.

    The final verdict for Daijobu Japanese BBQ

    Daijobu Japanese BBQ offers a decent Japanese BBQ option to the suburb of Ashfield. However, they have a long way to go if they want to compete with top BBQ restaurants in Sydney.

    Do you think I should go?
    You probably wouldn’t choose to specifically go to Daijobu to try their food.

  • Costa do Sol

    Costa do Sol

    Costa do Sol Review:

    Everyone should know by now that you are visiting Petersham in Sydney primarily for their Portuguese Charcoal Chicken joint or Portuguese cuisine in general.

    Costa do sol is one of the many Portuguese restaurants in Petersham. They offer a more sit down approach to dining. They have a slightly more diverse menu than the charcoal chicken joint.

    Misto de Carne A Moda da Casa – $55 – Meat Platter Char-grilled served with salad, rice and fried potatoes (serves 2)

    One thing that caught our eyes was the meat platter. I am imagining a massive platter of meat with a few side dishes. The plate came with a few cuts of beef, chicken, lamb, and quail.

    I know it said serves 2 in the menu… but that’s if you are ONLY ordering that. The dish was more geared towards four people. It was probably one of the more satisfying meat platters I have ever ordered.

    Bacalhau A Minhota – $30 – Salt-preserved Cod Fish Minhota style served with fried potato scallops

    Bacalhau is a traditional Portuguese dish that is mainly made from a dried and salted codfish. Bacalhau a Minhota is a variant of the dish from the Northern part of Portugal.

    Bacalhau is probably more of an acquired taste as the base taste is quite salty. Funny enough when we reheated the dish (after having it for takeaway), the salty taste, sort of, diminished.

    Caramel Pudding

    I can’t quite recall my experience eating the caramel pudding/flan. It was just an okay one.

    The final verdict for Costa do Sol

    Costa do Sol is a pretty decent Portuguese restaurant with a very nice Meat Platter.

    Do you think I should go?
    There is no denying that you usually go to Petersham for the charcoal chicken. But, if you want a good Portuguese alternative that’s not too busy, then Costa do Sol might be the one for you.
