2016 Top 100 Restaurants in Australia by Financial Review

This is the second year the Australian Financial Review published the Top 100 restaurants in Australia. Instead of being judged by food critics / food bloggers / some random people, the list was actually made by the top 500 chefs in Australia. Being at the top of the list means that your peers agreed that your restaurant is the best in Australia. I am pretty sure that’s the best recognition that you could possibly get.

Attica is at the top of this list of 2016 Top 100 Restaurants in Australia. Australia’s Top Chef award is given to chef Dan Hunter from Brae in Birregurra region in Victoria. On this occasion, Australian Financial Review also asked the public to vote for their top Australian restaurant with an award called The People’s Choice. The People’s Choice winner for 2016 is Akiba in Canberra. We went to Akiba last year and we were pretty impressed with the dishes that they served. Sepia, last year’s winner, was awarded Top Service award for 2016.

  • The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2015

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2015

Despite the name ‘world’s 50 best restaurants’, the organiser actually named the top 100 restaurants in 2015. They released the list for 51 – 100 a week earlier.

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2015

The top three is pretty similar when compared to last year. El Celler de Can Roca (from Girona, Catalan, Spain) has retaken the top spot from Noma (from Copenhagen, Denmark) in this year’s 50 best restaurants list. Noma actually dropped two spots to number 3. The runner up is Osteria Francescana from Modena, Italy.

Australian Restaurants in the 50 best restaurants 2015

Once again, Attica from Melbourne is the only restaurant from Australia included in the 50 best restaurants list. Their ranking is steady at 32.

Three more Australian restaurants were included in the top 100 list:

Quay at 58. Quay is still the only restaurant in the list that we have visited.

    – Sepia at 84. In addition to being a debutant on this year’s list. Sepia is also named as the one to watch in 2015. It has certainly been on our list for as long as we can remember!!

    – Brae at 87. Brae is a countryside restaurant in Birregurra, Victoria. According to the 2006 census, Birregurra was only inhabited by 688 people!

The list for the top four restaurants in Australia  is very similar to the one voted by Australian chefs in Financial Review.

    Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2015

Earlier in the year theworlds50best.com released a list of Asia’s 50 best restaurants 2015. Gaggan from Bangkok Thailand is number one on the list.

However, on the world’s 50 best restaurants 2015 released yesterday, Narisawa from Tokyo, Japan actually ranked higher than Gaggan. I am actually not sure how they managed to be ranked differently.

    Indonesia’s best restaurant in 2015

Indonesia was represented by one restaurant in 2014. However, not a single restaurant managed to get into the 2015 list.

  • The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

The award season is here! It is the world’s 50 best restaurants 2014. To be named in this site as the world’s 50 best restaurants is probably the highest accomplishment a chef can get.

    The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

Despite a different winner, there were no surprises in the Top 3 list this year. Noma reclaimed the top spot as the best restaurant in the world. This Danish restaurant came up second last year but winner of the previous three. El Celler De Can Roca from Spain was knocked back to number two. Osteria Francescana from Italy is the third best for the last two years.

    Australia’s best restaurants in 2014

Despite falling 11 places to number 32, Attica from Melbourne is still the best restaurant in Australia. Attica is also the only Australian restaurant in this 50 best restaurants list. This year, they even won the Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in Australasia.

Quay, the only restaurant that all about food blog has reviewed, fell 12 spots to number 60.

    Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014

As a spin-off to the list, they also produced the 50 best restaurants list for Asian region.

This year’s top Asia 50 best restaurants is Nahm from Bangkok, Thailand. Last year’s winner, Narisawa, got the runner up position. Interestingly, Nahm became the top restaurant in Thailand after being the first (and only?) Thai restaurant in London to receive a Michelin star.

    Indonesia’s best restaurant in 2014

As an Indonesian descent, I am happy to know that  one Indonesian restaurant in on the list! Sarong Restaurant Bali was listed at number 47 in the Asia’s 50 best restaurants 2014. Founder chef, Will Meyrick, was known to be an apprentice for Gordon Ramsay. He used to own Longrain restaurant in Sydney. Looking briefly at the menu, it looked like a mishmash of Asian food.
