2018 Top 100 Restaurants in Australia by Financial Review

Last week, the Australian Financial Review published the 2018 Top 100 restaurants in Australia. Instead of being judged by food critics/food bloggers/some random people, the list was actually made by the top 500 chefs in Australia. Being at the top of the list means that your peers agreed that your restaurant is the best in Australia. I am pretty sure that’s the best recognition that you could possibly get.

  • Alchemy Restaurant and Bar

    Alchemy Restaurant and Bar

    Review:

How many times have you seen chef prepare the dish in front of you in a restaurant? Possibly not that many.

How many times have you seen chef use liquid nitrogen in that preparation? Possibly almost none!

Alchemy restaurant did just that and with a pretty high standard! They call it the ‘Nitro Bomb’. For just a fraction of your total bill ($9), you can enjoy liquid nitrogen sweet gastronomic nibbles. The nibbles were also quite varied (but they were strictly adult-only): Honeycomb, vodka meringue, tia maria meringue, and blood orange ice cream.

‘Nitro Bomb’ liquid nitrogen sweet gastronomic nibbles – $9

    Sweet Gastronomic Nibbles

Alchemy restaurant is located in a nice riverside walk in Brisbane. You can opt to choose from the usual menu or their daily specials that were explained by the waitress.

I had a couple of dishes for the Entree: an oyster and pork belly. It was a pretty simple oyster with some slices of cucumber and a hint of yuzu. The pork belly was originated from Northern Rivers with diced eggplant (aubergine), apple salad and crackling. My pork belly was still pretty hot when served.

    Yuzu Oyster
Oysters with compressed cucumber and yuzu – $4.5
    Pork Belly
Northern Rivers Pork Belly with Yoghurt Spiced Aubergine, Apple Salad and Crackling – $28

For the main course, I ordered braised beef cheek. The beef cheek was accompanied by silky smooth mashed potatoes, diced bacon, and mushrooms with red wine reduction sauce. The beef cheek was near perfection! You do not really need to use your knife because the meat was so delicate! It was a beautifully balanced dish. However, this main course was also pretty hot when served.

Feeling already a bit full, I pushed myself for a dessert, because the waitress told me that the Nitro Bomb was just nibbles. My choice fell to my personal favourite, Souffle. Their unique rendition of the soufflé involved mixed berry inside and outside the pot. It gave a very rich berry flavour for the souffle. For an even added flavour, you can mix almond crumble into the pot. Depending on how you normally enjoy a soufflé, you can either have the white chocolate ice cream infused or have it on its own.

The verdict for Alchemy Restaurant and Bar

I left Alchemy Restaurant and Bar with a very full stomach and very happy feeling. Obviously, the highlight of the night was its nitro bomb and the beautiful display of craftsmanship.

    Review:

Welcome to my first review on Brisbane’s restaurant. I was lucky that I stayed in South Bank, a suburb known for its restaurants. It is also my first review on Turkish restaurant. The restaurant is simply known as Ahmet’s.

Since we didn’t quite know what to order, we’ve decided to order Ahmet’s King Feast (whoa!! Such a grand name, eh?). Ahmet’s King Feast is an 8-course share plates for the whole table (I list the food descriptions at the very end). Interestingly, you don’t need to order with the number of people on the table. I suggest you only order four when you come with a group of five (they are massive!!!). Let’s get the show on the road…

I am glad they decided to bring freshly baked Turkish bread & Turkish garlic bread served with dips (eggplant and hommus) as the first one as we were quite hungry then. The second was Kisir. It was very spicy for my taste and I am not sure where the spicy taste came from as the ingredients were only bulgur, parsley, tomato on a lettuce.

According to the menu, the third one was Ege Bogrek. They were deep fried cheese balls with sour cream on the side. Another quite filling dish (my tummy was quickly filling up just on the third dish!). Luckily the fourth was a simple Falafel with Hommus. Another type of carbs comes in for the fifth dish, Kiymali Pide! At this stage, some of us have already started feeling the pressure and it wasn’t even the main dish.

Ege Bogrek – Filo Pastry hand rolled with three cheeses, parsley, shallots & dill  Falafel with Hommus  Kiymali Pide – Turkish pizza with lamb mince, tomato, onion, parsley, red capsicum, green chilli, sweet chilli & garlic

After waiting quite a long time with tummy almost at a capacity, the main course arrives. It was Mixed Grill Platter (a massive one!!) with Yesil Salad on the side. There were five kinds of grill on this one and they were all cooked perfectly!

Mixed grill platter – Lamb cutlets, prawns, chicken, lamb & adana skewers  Yesil Salad – Green leaf, tomato, Spanish onion, cucumber, parsley, sumac, fetta and lemon dressing

Last, but not least, we have a petite dessert of Turkish Delight. Obviously a lot smoother than the ones you bought at the supermarket, but didn’t taste more special.

The final verdict for Ahmet’s Turkish Restaurant

Phew! That would be the first word we said at the end of the day at Ahmet’s. We were indulged by the grandeur of Ahmet’s King Feast and for a price that won’t drain your pocket!
